Woodchip vigil and truck count at the chipmill corner
Local conservationists will hold a truck count and protest vigil at the Edrom Road turn off to the Eden woodchip mill today.
The protest follows major blockades in Tantawangalo Forest during the past 2 weeks and the truck count is regular industry monitoring co-ordinated by the Chipstop campaign.
"We gather useful information from these counts about levels of activity in the industry, the type of trees being felled and where the logs are coming from," says Chipstop Convener, Harriett Swift, who is also South East Region Conservation Alliance (SERCA) Deputy Convenor.
Ms Swift said that since the change of ownership of the woodchip mill and the recent work to repair the conveyor belt and jetty there are still many unanswered questions and the state of the industry.
"We are hoping that our observations will give us a better understanding of what is going on," Ms Swift says.
